Hat: Wack Attack?

So sometime last spring, I went on a winter clothes sale-shopping blitz at UO and ended up with some stuff that I can only just recently wear out of the house. I don't do super well with hats (okay, I hate hats), and this one hat in particular has been confusing me. Until I realized...it is meant to be worn like this:

Only I have a lot more hair than this dude. I would hope the hat looks like this on me:

But my hair isn't quite that long. It is actually sort of an awkward length/texture right now!

But I do have a real advice issue here: how does a medium-length, wavy-haired person wear these hats? It looks too much like Erykah Badu when I put my hair back before slouching on the hat, but when my hair is down it's just fuzzin'. What do ya do!?

Etsy and Vintage Clothes

Since moving to a new town, I've been lavishing in thrift store heaven. The stores are so good that I can't even bare to walk into a store that sells new clothes, except if it is Old Navy and the sweater is three dollars, or if I'm shopping for underwear/a bathing suit/socks.

The thrift stores can meet my every clothing and home decor need. And by thrift stores I typically mean Goodwill, because they are da bomb. The further you go out into the country, the more clean, organized they are, and most importantly the better the clothes and the smells are too.

Which brings me to Etsy. Etsy is great for buying "vintage clothes", but it can be difficult to find something because there is just SO much. Its always convenient to have a general idea of something you might want. But lets face it, most of us don't most of the time. If you don't know what your looking for, then its best to find a store that you really like, and then bookmark that store, adding it to your "favorites". If you are searching for something specific, these "trendy" tags might help, even though they are stupid and embarrassing to even type. Just make sure no one is around.

I wouldn't bother searching for a size, because nobody puts them in tags for some dumb reason. If measurements are there, (as they really need to be), the best thing to do is compare the measurements to a similar article that you have that fits you well.

Another helpful tool is to search for seasons: "winter", "summer", "fall", etc. You can also limit by price (on the left) to find sweet dealz!

The Daily Tar Heel has an Opinions feature called the Kvetching Board, which I read a lot. I also get mad and sad a lot when I read it, and this morning I'm real irritable. There seems to be a lot of hate for "hipsters" on the Kvetching Board, and besides being irrelevant, these kinds of jokes are super unfunny. The authors seem to not even be trying! I mean, anyone could easily copy out jokes from Burger King commercials!

Kvetch 1: To the girls at Weaver Street Market: Is that a co-op number under your arms? Oh no, that’s just armpit hair. A lot of it.

Ohh, hilarious! Hippies at Weaver Street! A person might realistically wear (?) or carry (?) a co-op number under their arms in a way that looks like armpit hair! Haha, ewww!

Kvetch 2: Dear male hipsters: Please stop wearing cut-off jorts. It’s disturbing.

Well guess what, complainer! Regular jorts are even worse! Cut-offs look good, plus you don't have to buy cargo shorts at JC Penney, as you seem to enjoy! Here's another newsflash: calling them jorts isn't that funny!

The Ultimate Accessory

I’ve never been able to accessorize well. I get so anxious when it comes to putting outfits together in the first place—forget about adding necklaces, earrings, hats, scarves, or even like, cool-colored nail polish or belts on top of that!!! Plus, let’s be real, nothing can make an entire ensemble made out of t-shirt material really look that much better.

Last year I found out I needed glasses. Holy shit, I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to go to a doctor of any sort so much in my life! I split for the LensCrafters optometrist immediately. Like any mid-twenties ex-Weezer fan, glasses represented the ultimate in cool, and I had forayed into fake ones more often than I care to admit on the road to my First Real Pair.

However, glasses are expensive as shit! I totally got ripped off, and was never happy with the frames forced on me by the horrid saleswoman at LC. Too masculine, too rectangular, too “designer-y.” I didn’t know any better!

I recently found out about Warby Parker. OMG, look how cute these glasses are! Look how Rachel Leigh Cook this girl is! I bought both of these pairs.



They are simple yet snazzy, and—the best part—are only $95 with lenses and you can get a full refund if you’re unhappy! If you aren’t put off by how preppy their website is, I recommend you do the “virtual try-on” with some of the sillier frames. What did we do before internet shopping?!


Glasses make everyone look a bit more polished and put together, without any of the risks involved with other accessory selection or placement! Rather than making a bold statement, glasses-wearers can say, “Oh, my glasses are cool? I’m not trying to be cool. I need them to see, ok?”

And I know what you’re thinking—yes, they’ll put fake lenses in for you.

GF really doesn't need another shoe post, but it's been a while and beggars can't be choosers!

These little buddies have been on my mind lately. I know I just bought shoes, but come onnnnn look at this beautiful blue!

Winnie's Dilemma

1. You need to get some shorts. They make something for every body shape now so there's no excuse. The high-waisted accented type really looks awesome, and will probably look awesome on every figure. I don't think the buttons will accentuate a waist - they always say this on What Not to Wear so I believe them - and they add a cool detail.

2. I think the best thing is balance when you're wearing shorts. If they're too tight and you want the eye diverted from your legs, a long, flowy patterned top - make sure you don't look pregnant! - would be great.

3. Mr. Rogers' cardigans are clutch. If you're working in an office who knows how many women that you work with are going through menopause. It's torture! You're going to need to be prepared. I have at least 3 cardigans on work rotation for this reason alone. They will also look great with shorts because they'll cover up parts of your body that you might be insecure about.

4. Color. I think this also makes outfits feel less like a uniform. I think a pair of denim and black shorts are necessity, after that go NUTZ!

Open Advice: Summer School Must-Haves?

I have a fashion question and I think this might be the place to ask it. This morning, I put on a boring outfit, topped only by yesterday's boring outfit, and the day before, and probably tomorrow will be as boring and dreadful. Pretty much every day, I wear some variation of this outfit, sans the large beaded necklace. Tucked-in shirt, A-line skirt, sandals, maybe a cardigan. BO-RING!

Does anybody have any better ideas for clothes to wear? Limitations: I hate wearing pants in summer, cannot pull off linen pants. Also would prefer not to wear any shorts that are pleated, button up the hips, or bag out. No cargo pants or denim if we can help it (I have one pair of jean cutoffs but prefer not to wear them at work...you know).

Other than that, I'm open to whatevs!
