Wish List/Print List

I've been fantasizing about an Alex Katz-inspired skirt or dress or even apron lately...something made out of this

or this

or this!
Wouldn't mind something made from these two, either:

Let me know if you know anyone in the silkscreen industry!

Chronicles of Never

Really enjoying Gareth Moody's 'Chronicles of Never' line. Although relatively young (launched in 2006), I hope these designs have longevity.  The label manefesto on the website reads:

"HAUNTED TREES AND SKELETON KEYS, REGARDED AS AN ELEMENT SITUATED WITHIN THE INTERSTELLAR SPACE OF A GALAXY. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH NAZARETH. REALISM, IMPRESSION-ISM, CUBISM, ANALYTICAL-CUBISM (1907-1908), SYNTHETIC CUBISM, THE CUBE WAS A REACTION AGAINST OPTICAL REALISM. THE MOVEMENT ENDED, AS DID THE CUBISTS - (ONLY TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE CUBOID)."

Androgyny FTW.

Field Fashionista Debut: Lookin’ good in the field

As a field biologist, you find yourself in a lot of hot, dirty, steamy situations. And that’s just during mating season. All kidding aside, field work requires working in a lot of unfavorable conditions. You may be required to work in heavy rains, intense heat, waist-deep water, or until the wee hours of the morning. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean you have to forfeit style.

Today I’ll cover one of my favorite basic field outfits. Unless you are working on land where hunting takes place, flashy colors are generally regarded as “no-no.” Inconspicuous earthy tones are the way to go. Beginning with the shirt:

shirtsafari Just your plain ol’ standard safari shirt. If I have to go out in public prior to entering the field, I like to accent it with a brightly colored necklace (preferred: turquoise). Giving you the air of sophistication, until they look down:

zipoffpantsYour convertible shopants will probably be dirty from a whole week’s (month’s?!) worth of field work that you refuse to wash because you’re trying to make the most of the 100% DEET you sprayed on at the beginning of the field season. And to finish it all off:

lacrosserubberbootA nice tall pair of rubber boots by LaCrosse. Fashionable and functional. Keeps your feet dry and also easily decontaminated with a bleach solution for when (in my case) working with a potentially fungal-infected species.

Next time you’re headed into the field, now you know you can still look good with some basic clothing items. Stayed tuned for more field fashionista tips dealing with hip-waders, Tyvek suits, all sorts or protective masks, and more!

fashion faux pas: tattoo edition

This fashion faux pas combines 2 things I love the most - Juggalos and Coolio.
Not only did he GET a Juggalo tattoo, but he MISSPELLED said Juggalo tattoo. All I'm saying is, before u go and put something on you for life, I mean I can understand not knowing how to spell Juggalo, but...eh whatever...more of this PLEASE!

OUCH!

From the fabulous TMZ: "The "Angsta's Paradise" rapper isn't losing any sleep -- telling TMZ the typo was done on purpose and he doesn't plan to fix it."

NICE SAVE my man!

"Jugalo" Cool 4 Life!

Johnson's Shoe Update

As a modern man, fashion is naturally my lowest priority. That's why I've worn the same shoes every day for the past 5 years. They are called "Margaritavilles" and they look very similar to the ones pictured above.

Why do I like these shoes?
-Well they're durable. I've worn them every day for the past 5 years.
-They're versatile. I can wear them to work in the day and then to the club at night (UPDATE: You can also wear them to a golf club). People usually smile when they see them because they are so appropriate for almost any situation. Do you have to wear socks? If these shoes could talk they would probably say "Whatever you want bro."
-They are easy to live with. I don't have to fiddle with laces which means I can literally get in and out of them in a snap. Airport security loves these things.
-They are ironic. A young adult wearing Jimmy Buffet shoes? That's the kind of guy people want to talk to. You know I'm a Neil Patrick Harris fan.

I swear to God it looks like I bought these shoes yesterday...that's how well they have held up. Plus they have that John-Cusack-in-One-Crazy-Summer vibe. I seriously have zero complaints about these. Not one.

Got Some Trendy Shoes

I live in Chapel Hill in a neighborhood full of ("greek life") undergrads, so I guess you could say I'm pretty up on the latest styles...sort of! Depends on who you are, I guess. But one thing that's ubiquitous in my neighborhood as well as yours is TOMS. Holy cow, I see about 20 pairs a day.

So obviously I just bought some! I was stressing out about the styles because it turns out there are lots of cute ones, and finally decided on these lil' babies:
I'm pretty into the pastel-heavy 1980's preppy look, if only to admire other people pulling off pleated khakis...I think of Jennifer Grey in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, or maybe an Utne Reader (Mother Jones, whatev) staffer from 1987...or, let's face it, Hope from Thirtysomething! Can't wait to try these out with some gently-washed denim and earrings made out of pottery.

tootaloo!

Style Icon: Elaine Benes

I’m a sucker for clothes that remind me of a movie or TV show. It is only natural then that I would gravitate toward clothing that reminds me of Elaine Benes. It all started at Target when I found what is now my favorite dress. Flowing and flowery, I resisted it on that shopping trip. On another trip to Target, I happily found it on a discount rack. Get out!

I once wore it to Buffalo Exchange, which is sometimes the best, sometimes the worst clothing store. I went into the dressing room to try on a few things. As I tried on a denim shirt over the dress, I kind of freaked out. It was like the episode where Elaine realizes she has become George and says, “I’m George! I’m George!” My reaction was something like that, except I whispered, “I’m Elaine Benes! I’m Elaine Benes!” at the mirror. So I purchased the denim shirt, which I have never once worn, and a leather backpack.

Ah, the leather backpack. Hold the loafers. Hold the workout clothes. Hold the urban sombrero. Of all of Elaine’s fashion items, this might be my favorite. My roommate once said, “Every time I see the backpack, I think of Elaine.” I was flattered, and just to be sure, I responded with “Elaine Benes?” Rich leather exterior and polyester lining. Two straps to clutch to your chest or hang from your back. Endless zipper compartments for an endless number of items. The perfect accessory for running alongside a train, waving last goodbyes, and posing on a veranda. You’re the queen of the castle. You’re bizarro Elaine.

Winnie's Dilemma

WinnieSummerFashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore

1. You need to get some shorts. They make something for every body shape now so there's no excuse. The high-waisted accented type really looks awesome, and will probably look awesome on every figure. I don't think the buttons will accentuate a waist - they always say this on What Not to Wear so I believe them - and they add a cool detail.

2. I think the best thing is balance when you're wearing shorts. If they're too tight and you want the eye diverted from your legs, a long, flowy patterned top - make sure you don't look pregnant! - would be great.

3. Mr. Rogers' cardigans are clutch. If you're working in an office who knows how many women that you work with are going through menopause. It's torture! You're going to need to be prepared. I have at least 3 cardigans on work rotation for this reason alone. They will also look great with shorts because they'll cover up parts of your body that you might be insecure about.

4. Color. I think this also makes outfits feel less like a uniform. I think a pair of denim and black shorts are necessity, after that go NUTZ!

Open Advice: Summer School Must-Haves?

I have a fashion question and I think this might be the place to ask it. This morning, I put on a boring outfit, topped only by yesterday's boring outfit, and the day before, and probably tomorrow will be as boring and dreadful. Pretty much every day, I wear some variation of this outfit, sans the large beaded necklace. Tucked-in shirt, A-line skirt, sandals, maybe a cardigan. BO-RING!

Does anybody have any better ideas for clothes to wear? Limitations: I hate wearing pants in summer, cannot pull off linen pants. Also would prefer not to wear any shorts that are pleated, button up the hips, or bag out. No cargo pants or denim if we can help it (I have one pair of jean cutoffs but prefer not to wear them at work...you know).

Other than that, I'm open to whatevs!
